Match Report 9th January 2019
RB3 vs St Philips 3 (A)
After making the bold decision to drop..... myself from the team, Kiranam stepping upto the plate, the team was ready to play. Oh wait, what was that Dave? Your shoulder is buggered and you wont be able to play!..... and Rob is back in the team.
Line up for the match is Rob/Kiranam, Rich/Jack then on the split Rob/Rich, Kiranam/Jack. The courts are not good, with bad lighting and a basketball hoop overhanging 1 court with a training cricket net, this was going to be fun. First Rubber with Rob/Kiranam and we get battered, i mean it was embassing 🙁 but Rich and Jack take a rubber with ease. Next rubber, Rob an Kiranam take the first game, but in the second game, while running for a drop shot (yes i can run), my knee gives out on me. At first not seeming too bad, but starts to swell up and causing increasing pain. We loose the next two games.
Despite having a bit of a fall on the cricket netting for Rich, they manage to take another rubber, with two close games. 2-2 going into the split. Ample applications of deep heat on the knee in the break. Kiranam and Jack have the weaker pair, but just barely getting into the teens for both games. 3-2, and best we can now do is a draw. Rob and Rich take the fist game in 13, a stellar performace from Rich who was on fire the whole night. Second game and the opposition have a quick team talk, and I swear i hear the words "Sweep the leg Johnny". Their new tactic was with out doubt, to play on the injured Rob, which came apparent after loosing the first 4 popint. 🙁 A chat to Rich, and asking a lot, but I will push forward to avoid being played on so much. RICH takes the game, 17-21, and even finishes with an acrobatic dive at the net to pull off an outstanding cross-court net shot. 3-3 on the night (6-7 in games, so we count that as a win).
Our first points on the board with a draw, and have to say it was all Rich..... or was it all Dave, being the first game he wasnt there.... we will never know 😉
However, my knee is now well buggered. All strapped up and dosed up. Might be out for a few weeks, so plent of time for Dave to prove it was Rich.

LM2 vs Panthers II (H)
Wow, what an night. We we’re off to a great start with Daan and Anand winning their first, and me a Steve doing likewise. This meant we started 2-1 up, and it was looking great with Daan and Anand having won their first game against the opponent’s 1st team, and Sam and Alex we’re beating their second pair with a 21-15 win in the first game. “Great” I was thinking, we’re gonna we 4-1 up with plenty of games to go, but before you know it, Daan and Anand had unfortunately lost the next 2 games of the 3 against their 1st pair, and the same had happened with Sam and Alex against the 2nd.
What I though would be a 4-1 lead was actually being 3-2 down. Thankfully me and Steve had managed to beat their first pair to 11 and 14, but meanwhile Daan and Anand had battled their 3rd pair and came so close, but only managed to get 19 and 18. This had meant we were 4-3 down in total, with 2 games to go (those being Sam and Alex’s match vs their 3rd, and mine and Steve’s game against their 2nd, who hadn’t lost a rubber so far...). So we both needed the win, and to add to the suspense, the leisure staff were calling time, as it was quarter past 10 at this point. Leaving the match would have meant a forfeit, and no chance of winning the league... Sam and Alex has won their first to 14, and me and Steve had worked hard for a 24-22 win, (again, the leisure staff were calling time). To our delight, Sam and Alex had won their second and that game! 4-4, but me and Steve had lost the second to 16. It all came down to this.
One last game, with everyone watching, and our hopes of still being in with a chance of winning the league we’re hanging in the balance of this game (and the leisure staff’s patience). It was a tight game, going point for point, but we had the advantage of swapping ends being 11-10 up. Still the staff were calling time, and I believe at this point the opposition knew that if we had to call the match due to time, they would have won. (Their title hopes also hung in the balance of this match, as they’d only lost 1 in the league). This meant they were taking their time, it couldn’t have been any more suspense (for me at least). After keeping our composure, we’d managed to get into a position of being 20-16 up, just 1 more point to win it. But then, 20-17... 20-18..... 20-19!.......... AND THEN THE VICTORY 😆😆😆😆 we’d beat them 21-19, having had to beg the staff to let us play until the end (a special thanks to the rest of the team for their persuading skills), and a 5-4 win overall, thus meaning that our title chances are still on!
Great game tonight and thanks to everyone that had played and watched. The most enjoyment I’ve ever had from badminton, and I hope for many more like this. Bring on the next game 💪💪💪
